We subconsciously exert lower effort as the number of teammates increase.
This is worse in an environment where individual performance is obscured by others. Each additional teammate reduces the performance of the entire team.
Fewer is not worse, more is not better. To build a high-performing team with many members, create an environment that makes the performance of each member conspicuous.
